Webinaire (en anglais) – The strengthening of university role in the implementation of SDG’s

3 février 2023 : 20 h 00 min - 22 h 30 min

Higher education institutions are an important stakeholder sharing the responsibility of the entire international community for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out in the 2030 Agenda.

Every year, the high-level political forum on Sustainable development presents voluntary reviews of progress made at the country level in order to improve the quality of decisions taken and develop more effective policies in the field of sustainable development. Kazakhstan has made long-term commitments to achieve carbon neutrality. In fact, our country was one of the first to ratify the Paris Agreement. Following this, we formulated an ambitious but thoughtful policy aimed at diversifying the economy and promoting renewable energy sources and sustainable technologies,” President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said at the Summit on Sustainable Development in Abu Dhabi (January 2023).

For the timely implementation of the planned SDGs, Kazakhstan and other countries of the world need highly qualified specialists, managers and researchers in the field of advanced technologies, the high-quality training of which should be undertaken (provided) by Universities.

The purpose of the webinar is to assess the contribution of universities to the achievement of the SDGs, strengthen collaboration by bringing together the experience of practitioners in the field of SDGs, and promote new initiatives that drive change.

Naturally, higher education can contribute to the achievement of Goals 8 and 1 (Sustained Economic Growth and Poverty Eradication). But achieving the rest of the goals, from developing the agricultural sector and sustainable infrastructure to conserving nature and combating the devastating effects of climate change, is also impossible without the participation of scientists and highly qualified professionals, and without using the results of cutting-edge research in the process of finding solutions to the huge problems with which our planet collided. In addition, to achieve the SDGs, we need strong institutions responsible for developing and implementing policy decisions, and conscientious citizens who care about social and economic inclusiveness and environmental sustainability.

Research work ceased to be strictly narrowly disciplinary, and began to focus on solving specific problems; groups of scientists from different disciplines work together to solve complex problems, many of which affect the interests of all mankind, regardless of political boundaries. This process is well understood by the example of the global health problems of recent years, from the spread of SARS and the Middle East respiratory syndrome to the recent epidemic of coronovirus.

In the process of discussing the role of universities in the implementation of the SDGs, issues of cooperation will be considered in such areas as the inclusion of the SDGs in the pedagogical and scientific activities of teachers, the introduction of the SDGs into internal management, culture and university management in general, and the development of youth leadership potential in the implementation of the SDGs.
